Secret Solstice 2015 – a Preview

Held for the second time this June, Secret Solstice music festival promises to be a real treat for music fans once again.

During the longest days of the year, when the sun doesn’t set here in Iceland, people will gather in Laugardalur, or ‘Hot Spring Valley.’ Until the early 1900s, people bathed and did their laundry in the springs. Now people mostly frequent the area to visit the sport stadium and hall, to go to the pool, ice-skating rink or petting zoo.

What’s great about the location is that it’s in the middle of a residential area, but feels miles away. As someone who isn’t keen on festivals where camping is a must, this is great; I can still return home to my comfy bed at night.

This year’s lineup includes Icelandic bands like electronic legends GusGus, Ham, one of Iceland’s greatest rock bands, and reggae band Hjálmar. Rappers, such as Gísli Pálmi, whose recently released album set a record here in Iceland for the most copies sold in one day, and Blaz Roca will also hit the stage.

International highlights include Flight Facilities, the Danish singer MØ, the captivating FKA Twigs, and of course, headliners Wu-Tang Clan. Kelis will also perform and I am certain her songs and milkshake will “bring all the boys to the yard.”

Grab a ticket, check out the impressive line-up and stay up into the bright night!

Secret Solstice runs from June 19-21. For more information visit secretsolstice.is.

Iceland Airwaves 2016: PJ Harvey

The legends spot provides plenty of inspiration for the younger acts, while maybe failing to bring out the excitement in the crowd.
