Capital-area police are investigating the causes of an explosion in a garage in the city of Kópavogur, just outside of Reykjavík, RÚV reports. As of the time of writing, the fire department was unable to confirm that the explosion had been caused by a gas leak. One alternate possibility is that a powerful backdraft during a fire could have caused the explosion.
There was one person in the home when the explosion occurred, but he was unharmed.
The damage caused by the explosion was considerable. The garage door was blown completely off, and the windows had burst as well. According to the fire department, there had been a fire in the basement of the split-level garage, but it had not reached the ground-level floor.
