The City of Reykjavík Human Rights Council has unanimously approved gender neutral restrooms in all of its administrative buildings, mbl.is reports. The changes to facilities will take effect starting this fall.

The committee has also decided to assess current facilities in all city offices in order to determine what changes need to be made in order to make them more accessible to individuals with different needs. This assessment will be made in conjunction with relevant interest groups.

The new toilets will be arranged in individual cubicles, and will therefore, according to the City’s press release, better serve the needs of many different groups of people, including trans and intersex individuals, children, and children with disabilities who are accompanied by a parent of a different gender. The individual cubicles are also intended to better serve people with health conditions, such as a stoma.

“The goal of the resolution is to reduce prejudice and establish better accessibility for all of society in its broadest form,” read the press release.
