An American couple in their forties has died after a fishing accident in Þingvallavatn lake in Southwest Iceland, RÚV reports. The couple was fishing on the lake when the woman appears to have lost her balance and fallen into the water. The man attempted to rescue the woman but was exhausted by the effort.

The couple was transported to a Reykjavík hospital after cabin owners in the vicinity managed to rescue them from the water. Efforts to revive them were unsuccessful, and the two were pronounced dead on Sunday night.

South Iceland Police and Reykjavík Capital Area Police are investigating the accident.
