A man was hospitalised after driving an excavator under the influence then leading police on a car chase in West Iceland, DV reports. The man, named Ingvar Örn Karlsson, is a candidate in Bláskógarbyggð municipality for party Nýtt afl in the upcoming municipal elections.

Police were called to Bláskógabyggð municipality, where Ingvar was seen driving an excavator under the influence beside his house. On the way to the scene in the police crossed paths with Ingvar, who was driving away by car. In a statement, police say they attempted to stop Ingvar but he evaded them by slamming their vehicle off the road. Eventually police succeeded in stopping Ingvar, though not before his car rolled over.

Ingvar Örn was subsequently transported to a Reykjavík hospital by helicopter. His injuries are not considered serious. No police sustained injuries in the incident.

Nýtt afl, the party for which Ingvar is a candidate, has released a public statement asking him to step down. The party, however, may not legally remove him from their candidate list so soon before an election.
