Eva Hauksdóttir is asking the public to help her find information about her son, who is believed to have died two weeks ago in Syria. Eva wrote in a blog post that it is as yet unconfirmed whether her son Haukur Hilmarsson is dead, but it seems to be the case. RÚV reported first.

According to Turkish media, Haukur is said to have fought alongside Kurdish defence forces in Northwest Syria against Turkish troops and died in a bombing in the province of Afrin on February 24th. He had come to Syria from Greece last July, and participated in Kurdish resistance against the terrorist organization of the Islamic State in Raqqa.

The Revolutionary Abolitionist Movement tweeted the following about Haukur:

Anarchist revolutionary Haukur Hilmarsson was martyred in Afrin fighting against fascism. He was a respected comrade in the IFB. We mourn his passing and will carry the struggle on in his memory and in homage to every fallen revolutionary. pic.twitter.com/WqSIS6zGtF

The IFB, or International Freedom Battalion, is an armed group consisting of leftist foreign fighters fighting for the People’s Protection Units in the Syrian Civil War.

Haukur’s mother says neither she not others close to Haukur received notice prior to information about her son being published by media.

Eva says the Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs is in contact with the consul in Turkey, international police, and other agencies in an effort to learn what happened to Haukur and locate his remains.

Eva expressed her thanks for messages of support and offers of help which she has receive from friends and strangers. She asks anyone with information about Haukur’s activities in the past year to contact her by email at [email protected].
