Icelanders are expected to eat nearly nine and a half million mandarin oranges during the holidays, RÚV reports.
Every winter, the nation of 345.000 people has had great affection for the fruit. This coincides with the first harvest from Spain which arrives in stores in November and December.
Mandarin importers will ship roughly 620 tons to Iceland this holiday season. Each fruit weighs approximately 70 grams (2.4 oz), which means that 9.3 million mandarins are brought to Icelandic markets. According to RÚV, every Icelander will thus be eating a whole box of mandarins this year, an average of 27 mandarins per person.
