Five Women, Six Men in New Cabinet

The coalition government between the Independence Party, the Left-Green Movement and the Progressive Party has officially taken power. The Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir, held its first ever state council meeting earlier today.

Five women are in Cabinet against six men, making it the second-most gender-balanced cabinet in Icelandic history. One minister, Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson from the Left-Green Movement, is not an acting MP. He is also the first openly gay man to serve as a minister in Iceland.

The ministers are as follows.

Prime Minister
Katrín Jakobsdóttir. Chairman of the Left-Green Movement.

Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs
Bjarni Benediktsson. Chairman of the Independence Party.

Minister of Transport and Local Government
Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson. Chairman of the Progressive Party.

Minister of Health
Svandís Svavarsdóttir. Member of Parliament for the Left-Green Movement.

Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture
Kristján Þór Júlíusson. Outgoing Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for the Independence Party.

Minister of Education, Science and Culture
Lilja Alfreðsdóttir. Member of Parliament for the Progressive Party.

Minister for Foreign Affairs
Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson. Held the same position in the previous cabinet. Member of Parliament for the Independence Party.

Minister for the Environment and Natural Resources
Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson. CEO of the Icelandic Environment Association and member of the Left-Green Movement.

Minister of Justice
Sigríður Á. Andersen. Held the same position in the previous cabinet. Member of Parliament for the Independence Party.

Minister of Social Affairs and Equality
Ásmundur Einar Daðason. Member of Parliament for the Progressive Party.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Innovation
Þórdís Kolbrún R. Gylfadóttir. Held the same position in the previous cabinet. Member of Parliament for the Independence Party.
