Icelandic Minister of Health Óttarr Proppé is in Bangladesh on a UNICEF mission to observe the situation of the Rohingya people from Myanmar who are fleeing persecution in their home country, RÚV reports. More than one million people live in the refugee camps along the border between Bangladesh and Myanmar, and one third of the refugees are children, says Óttarr.
In a post on his Facebook page, Óttarr states he will meet with refugee families at the camps near the Myanmar border. The minister will also observe projects set up by the UN and Red Cross in the refugee camps and surrounding areas.
Óttarr will also be meeting with a minister in Dhaka to discuss the new agreement between Bangladesh and Myanmar for plans for repatriation. In regards to the agreement, the minister states “the international community and the UN must be involved and the security and human rights of all individuals must be assured.”
