Update: The phone call made to emergency services last night was not in fact a prank, RÚV reports. The caller believed her friend had gone into the sea following an argument the two had, and called emergency services immediately. The friend was found 40 minutes later. The two women were released after a report was taken. Police are investigating the matter. It is not yet known whether the women will be charged.

Police arrested two women last night who called emergency services claiming a man had gone into the sea near the Laugarnes district in eastern Reykjavík, RÚV reports. A fire truck was rushed to the scene along with two boats and an entire police team. A thermal camera was used in the search, which was stopped when the caller was found and admitted the call had been a prank.

Chief Security Officer Rafn Hilmar Guðmundsson told RÚV the woman who made the prank call was not a child or teenager, rather an adult.
