A man has been charged with a string of sexual assaults against a girl in 2015, when he was in charge of a Christian teenagers’ group.

The case came to the Reykjavík District Court yesterday and the state prosecutor states in the charge sheet that the man broke his duty of trust towards the girl, who he had been trusted with teaching and protecting.

Though the charges were laid at the end of March and the court case started yesterday, it has not been made public which Christian-run teenagers’ group the man was in charge of.

The man stands accused of having sexual contact with the girl 20 times while she was 16 and 17 years old. He did so by using the position of trust he had with her thanks to his age and experience, it is alleged. He is accused of taking advantage of the fact that the girl was tied to him after confiding in him in his role as head of the Christian group, and telling him her secrets.

The girl attended the teenagers’ group and trusted the accused with details of the considerable difficulties she had in her private life at the time. In the charges, the man is said to have taken the girl under his wing and helped her throughout the group’s project, and after it finished. He is said to have given her a key to his home, where she could seek shelter from family problems. She is said to have spent a lot of time at his home, RÚV reports.

The girl has put in a compensation claim with the court for ISK 2.5 million (EUR 21,466/USD 23,471).
